FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this paycheck calculator?+

It uses the 2024 IRS federal brackets, the standard deduction for your filing status, the FICA Social Security wage base ($168,600), and approximate 2024 state income tax brackets for all 50 states + DC. Estimates only — not tax advice.

Does it support hourly and salary pay?+

Yes. Toggle between salary and hourly modes. In hourly mode, you can include 1.5× overtime pay automatically calculated for any hours over 40 per week.

Are pre-tax deductions included?+

Yes. 401(k) contributions (entered as a percentage of gross or a flat dollar amount per paycheck) and health insurance premiums are subtracted from your gross pay before federal and state income tax is computed.

What if my state has no income tax?+

We zero out state income tax for AK, FL, NV, NH, SD, TN, TX, WA, and WY. You'll still see federal income tax and FICA in the breakdown.

What's the 2024 401(k) contribution limit?+

The IRS limit is $23,000 for employee contributions in 2024 (or $30,500 if you're 50+). The calculator doesn't enforce this cap — enter what you actually plan to contribute.

Does it include local or city taxes?+

No. Local taxes (NYC, Philadelphia, San Francisco, etc.), state SDI/SUI, post-tax deductions, and tax credits like the EITC are not included. For those, consult a tax professional.
